Point Defiance Zoo

A memorable outing in July was spent with Todd’s family at the zoo. We always enjoy getting to see family, even if only for a day.

Ada really loved the animal show! We asked her what her favorite thing was of the day, and that was it, especially when they brought out a skunk (no photo though) 🙂

La Jolla

One of the outings we did as a family was spend the day in La Jolla. It’s a great beach town and great for kids. Ada LOVED the water & the seaweed! It was the first time she really got to run around and play in the waves and it was especially fun with her cousins. Sigh…I do miss the warm sandy beaches in California quite a bit 🙂

Father’s Day

Ada & I flew down to California to visit my family for 9 days around the middle of June. We also got to be there for Father’s Day again (last year too). It was wonderful to be able to spend it with my Dad, but we did miss Todd.

We had a Father’s Day lunch at a lovely park in Oak Glen.

Baby Layla

At the end of May Todd’s sister had a precious baby girl, little miss Layla. We are really happy that Ada finally has a girl cousin (Ada has 5 boy cousins)! She is a sweetheart and we look forward to the years ahead of pink, frilly, girly things that only Ada and Layla can have in common 🙂

Caterpillars

So back in April or May until mid-June, we had some fuzzy little pets residing with us. Every time Ada would see a fuzzy caterpillar crawling outside, she would pick it up and take it inside to keep. We hosted 7 of these guys (I think they were Silver Spotted Tussock Moths) in a nice tiny terrarium complete with twigs, dirt, and their favorite flavor of fresh maple leaves. I tried numerous tree & shrub leaves until we found the “right” ones! One by one they turned their fuzzy bodies into nicely felted cocoons for themselves.

Finally, after several weeks and fearing they all had died, we saw a moth sitting atop his cocoon. Then we found a couple more. It was neat to see tiny little holes where the moths escaped from their fuzzy pods. We did lose 2 out of the 7, but that’s not too bad. I’m not even sure if we should have set them free since they may be a nuisance to the farming community 🙂 It was a fun experiment to say the least. It was also a good teaching lesson relating to the Christian life and how we too have been transformed into new creations through Christ (2 Cor 5:17).
